DONATE

Why do they stay?

There are two reasons for this:

These have become our Fairbanks City Birds! Our mission is to prevent their slow death by providing healthy food daily from October 15th through the 1st of May when the ice goes out and they can do what ducks do!

100% of any donation is used to buy their food!

Save Ducks in Fairbanks by donating to Feed the Ducks, a 501(c)(3) Non Profit Association, #26-3655382.  100% of your donation is tax deductible.

We want them to leave if at all possible!  We wait until October 15th to start feeding them - by that time all waterways along their flyway are frozen and migration is no longer an option.

Post it, tweet it, share it. The more people you tell, the more help we can receive.

SPREAD THE WORD
Mallards are dabbling ducks, not diving ducks, and when the shoreline freezes, these ducks are no longer able to access any natural food. The pictures show the ducks' condition at 30 degrees below zero. It's a hard life, but they survive with the proper food that we provide. If food isn't available on a daily basis, they will slowly starve and die!
The Chena River is open all winter from the Power Plant downtown about a mile and a half downriver to Pioneer Park due to heated water being discharged by the power plant.
These local mallards, the result of wild migratory ducks interbreeding with domestic birds released in the river over the years by well-meaning individuals, have lost the know-how to migrate and become permanent year-round Alaskan residents.
We feed the ducks daily a balanced diet recommended by Cornell University consisting of cracked corn, wheat, and a special pellet that includes the vitamins and minerals they need to keep them healthy. The ducks consume at least six heaping 5-gallon pails of this mixture daily.
You can imagine how expensive their food is for a winter. We would really appreciate your help - you can either hit the "Donate" button here, or send a check to Feed the Ducks, 518 Slater Drive, Fairbanks, AK 99701. 100% of every dollar we receive goes for food! And your donation is 100% tax deductible. We also need people to physically help feed the ducks - if you are local and want to help, please give us a call at 907-456-3066. We greatly appreciate anything you can do, and the ducks do, too!
